Jonathan Owens, Simone Biles' boyfriend, had no idea who she was when they first met.
During quarantine, the Olympic gymnast and NFL player fell in love.
Simone Biles is primed to win gold for Team USA at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. Unlike previous events, the 24-year-old gymnast will not be able to view her loved ones in the crowd. Her family and boyfriend, NFL star Jonathan Owens, will, however, be rooting for her the entire time.
Simone and Jonathan started dating in March and made their relationship public on Instagram in August 2020. The Olympic gold winner had a lot of unexpected free time when the Summer Games were officially postponed, and she told Glamour she met him on the celebrity dating app, Raya.
Simone told the Wall Street Journal Magazine, "He would claim I slid into his DMs." "I saw him and thought to myself, 'Oh, he's very beautiful,' so I said hello... and then I noticed that he was in the Houston area, so we started chatting and then went to meet out a week or two later."
However, Simone's younger sister, Adria, lent a hand to the pair. Adria grabbed her phone during a chat and invited Jonathan to a family lake home holiday after seeing Simone and Jonathan Facetime for several weeks. The future couple struck it off there, and the 25-year-old football player was soon invited to family dinners on Sundays.
Jonathan told Texas Monthly, "We ended up hanging out just before the epidemic." “It was one of the rare instances in her life when she couldn't do anything because everything was turned off. So we took advantage of it to get to know one another — truly get to know one another. It forged and strengthened our bond.”
Jonathan has been nothing but supportive since they started dating, and Simone is just as eager to be there for him. Jonathan continued his football career at Missouri Western State University after high school. He started playing with the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 and joined the Houston Texans practice squad a year later. He inked a contract with the Texans as a defensive back in 2020.
Simone told People that having so much downtime during quarantine had a silver lining: she got to observe Jonathan in action. "Being able to experience life with my family and friends has been extremely thrilling," she told the publication. "Being able to attend [NFL] games with my partner."
The relationship is still going strong after more than a year together. It's impossible to deny that the two appreciate one other's athleticism and commitment to their respective sports. Furthermore, their French bulldogs get along well.
