Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie, are expecting their second child, following the prime minister's wife's announcement earlier this year that she had a miscarriage.

Wilfred, the couple's son, was born in April 2020 after they married in secret at Westminster Cathedral in May.

On her Instagram page, Carrie Johnson revealed that she and her husband are expecting their second child, noting that a miscarriage had left her "heartbroken."

“I feel very fortunate to be pregnant again, but I've also been a nervous wreck. Many people struggle with fertility difficulties, especially when it appears on social media platforms like Instagram that everything is always going smoothly.

“It was reassuring to hear from those who had also suffered loss, and I hope that by sharing this, I may help others in some little way.”

Carrie, 33, announced her pregnancy in December by tweeting a photo of a pram bauble on a Christmas tree. “This Christmas, we're hoping for our rainbow baby,” she added.

Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour Party's leader, congratulated the newlyweds. “Congratulations to Carrie and Boris Johnson on the wonderful news of their second child,” he tweeted. I'm sad to learn about Carrie's previous miscarriage. I'm confident that her stepping up will bring relief to others. “All the best to them both.”

Wilfred was born only a few weeks after the prime minister had been released from critical care after being diagnosed with Covid-19. Nicholas, one of Wilfred's middle names, is named after a doctor who treated Johnson.

The prime leader has always refused to reveal his entire number of children. He is thought to be the father of at least five children with two women, in addition to Wilfred.

With his ex-wife Marina Wheeler, whom he married in 1993 and divorced in November 2020, the 57-year-old has four children. In 2009, he married Helen Macintyre, an art consultant, and they had a daughter.

In May, Downing Street announced that he had paid for all of Wilfred's daycare, despite allegations to the contrary.

Boris and Carrie Johnson first became associated in early 2019, just before he was promoted to No 10. When he was in the Department for Communities and Local Government, his future wife worked as an adviser to John Whittingdale, the then-culture secretary, and Sajid Javid.

Carrie Johnson went on to become the Conservative Party's head of communications before departing in 2018 to work in public relations for conservation organisations.

Their child will join a long history of prime leaders' children born while they were in office. David and Samantha Cameron had a daughter, Florence, in 2010, before Wilfred was born. Tony Blair and his wife, Cherie, had received their fourth child, Leo, a decade before.
