Jennifer Hudson recently talked up about playing her hero and mentor Aretha Franklin in the biopic Respect while promoting her new flick. During a conversation with THR, the actress explained how she and the late singer became friends when the icon reached out to her following the release of Dreamgirls.
Jennifer also discussed her final phone chat with the iconic singer, which took place just days before she died. Jennifer remembered, "The last time I heard her voice was August 8." Aretha Franklin died on August 16, 2018, for those who don't know.
Speaking about the fateful day on August 8, 2021, when the two exchanged a phone call while attending the red carpet premiere of Respect. “It's strange that here we are again, three years later, on August 8,” she remarked. They informed me she was no longer qualified to speak right after we spoke, but she sang to me on the phone and we spoke about my kid and his cuisine. He, like her, enjoys cooking. I emailed her a video of him preparing a meal. “It's been a long time since I've heard from her.”
Jennifer recently spoke with Variety about why she believes Aretha Franklin chose her to play her in the biopic. “I feel like it goes beyond the song and how Jennifer sings and behaves, and I believe it goes beyond that while we were filming. It's at the scene where Aretha's mother approaches her that I realized how true it was to my own life." I don't believe I would've been able to tell the tale without my own life experience and accomplishments," she said at the time, "and I feel like she saw far more than what I saw," she said. "I remarked at the time, 'This is what it was - this is why.' “It was stuff I learned during the film that made me think, ‘This has to be the reason,'” she explained.
