Britney Spears' new attorney says father must step aside
After a hearing in which Britney Spears tearfully testified about the case's impact on her life, an attorney of her choice has been assigned to represent her in her conservatorship.
At a hearing on Wednesday, a judge permitted Britney Spears to employ a counsel of her choice after she described the "cruelty" of her conservatorship.
Judge Brenda Penny of the Los Angeles Superior Court accepted Spears' employment of former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart, who demanded that Spears' father quit as her conservator immediately.
Outside the courthouse, Rosengart remarked, "The issue remains, why is he involved?"
Britney Spears, who was present at the court by phone, informed the judge that she approved of Rosengart after speaking with him numerous times. She then requested that she be allowed to speak before the court, but that the courtroom is cleared first.
“I can communicate with it open,” Spears said as Rosengart began to push for a private hearing.
“My father has to be removed from his position today,” she added, adding that she would want to see him prosecuted with abuse of power.
The court reporter and the scores of media people in the courtroom struggled to comprehend her because she spoke so quickly.
She stated that she wanted the conservatorship to terminate as soon as possible, but only provided it did not need any more “stupid” assessments. She stated that she did not want “people to doubt my intelligence for the millionth time.”

“I don't know what this is if it isn't abuse,” Spears remarked.
She remembered something "During the early years of the conservatorship, she was overworked and frequently inspected, and she felt they were attempting to kill her.

James Spears' attorney, Vivan Thoreen, stated in court that he would not resign as Rosengart demanded, adding that he has always had his daughter's best interests at heart.
Britney Spears, according to Thoreen, had several false ideas, including that "her father is responsible for all the horrible things that have occurred to her."
“I'm not sure if it's disinformation, a lack of correction, or being given incorrect advice,” Thoreen added.
Thoreen underlined that James Spears has only had authority over his daughter's money for nearly two years, handing up management of her life choices to a court-appointed expert, Jodi Montgomery.
Thoreen stated that an evidentiary hearing was required to investigate the claims made by Britney Spears on June 23, including that she was compelled to take medicines and use an intrauterine device for birth control.
Thoreen thought it strange that Britney Spears would describe such conditions as "abusive," yet then support Montgomery staying in her job as overseer.
Montgomery's attorney, Laurianne Wright, remarked that the last thing Britney Spears needed was to be called to the witness and cross-examined about the validity of her emotional testimony.
Wright stated, "I don't believe it's a secret that we're dealing with someone with mental illness."
Her medical team has "highly advised" that her father, Mr. Spears, be removed from conservatorship, according to Wright.
Since February 2008, Britney Spears has been under judicial supervision. Her family requested the conservatorship for her safety since she was having a public meltdown at the time.
Samuel Ingham III, a court-appointed attorney who had been representing her interests throughout the process, resigned following the emotional hearing three weeks ago in which the pop diva told Penny, "I just want my life back."
Outside the courthouse, supporters of the #FreeBritney campaign applauded the decision to nominate Rosengart, then applauded Rosengart as he went out.
In court, he questioned whether the conservatorship should have been instituted in the first place, and he stated that he and a team of attorneys from his firm would be scrutinizing the specifics of the arrangement.
"This isn't working," Rosengart stated emphatically. “We are aware of this.”
Outside the downtown Los Angeles courthouse, Florida congressman Matt Gaetz addressed the Spears fans, yelling "Free Britney!" at one point.
A group of Spears admirers demonstrated on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to show their support for the singer.
Although issues about the lawsuit's duration and the singer's sentiments about the procedures surfaced in recent years, the case had functioned with minimal drama for several years. This has resulted in a high level of public scrutiny of the court proceedings, which have been held mostly in secret owing to medical and confidential details regarding the singer's health.
The conservatorship's intricate network of attorneys and others has also received attention.
