On 'The Good Fight,' Selena Gomez slams a 'tasteless joke' about her kidney donation.
Selena Gomez expressed her dissatisfaction with another television show's joke regarding her kidney donation.
Several characters in a recent episode of Paramount+'s "The Good Fight" lamented cancel culture, saying that individuals now "need a permission slip to crack a joke." Ifádansi Rashad's Jim wonders if "Selena Gomez's kidney transplant" fits the cut as the characters decide what jokes are absolutely off-limits. Autism and necrophilia were among the topics brought up by other characters.
Gomez turned to social media on Tuesday to express her outrage after finding that "The Good Fight" made a reference to her life-saving kidney donation.
"I'm not sure how writing jokes about organ transplants for TV series became a thing," she tweeted. "I'm hoping that when one of these insensitive jokes is given in the next writer's room, it's promptly called out and doesn't make it on the broadcast."
In a follow-up tweet, the "Lose You to Love Me" singer thanked her fans for always having her support and urged those who are eligible to register as organ donors.
According to a source close to the show, ""If you watch the episode in its entirety, the reference to Selena Gomez is part of a discussion the characters are having about topics that are not okay to make fun of, as well as the idea of cancel culture and being canceled for telling a bad joke," according to "Good Morning America." Selena Gomez's transplant isn't anything to laugh about, according to the reference."
Peacock's reboot of "Saved By the Bell" and the Chinese variety program "Who's the Murderer?" had already been chastised for making jokes about Gomez's health. Both programs issued public statements apologizing for the offensive material and removing it.
Gomez stated in 2017 that she required a kidney transplant as a result of her lupus-related autoimmune illness. In a hospital bed, the "Wizards of Waverly Place" alum shared a selfie of herself and her donor, friend, and "Grown-ish" star Francia Rasa, holding hands.
