Why There Won't Be A Good Girls Season 5

It's official: "Good Girls" is no longer on the air. The last episodes of the crime drama-comedy series have recently aired, leaving cliffhangers and disappointed viewers in their wake. "Good Girls" follows three financially strapped suburban women called Elizabeth "Beth" Boland (Christina Hendricks), Ruby Hill (Retta), and Annie Marks (Mae Whitman). They decided to team up in an unusual money-making strategy – stealing a store — and quickly realized they were in over their heads as their lives were intertwined with local cops and other crooks.

The thrilling series received positive reviews from critics, with the first season receiving a 63 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the second and third seasons receiving 100 percent approval ratings. Unfortunately, "Good Girls" was canceled in June of this year for a variety of reasons, and fans are upset. Let's take a closer look at why the show was canceled and why a fifth season is unlikely to be produced.

The makers of Good Girls couldn't agree on a budget.

NBC initially agreed to extend "Good Girls" for the fifth season, and Hendricks, Retta, and Whitman even agreed to accept salary concessions to make it happen, according to TVLine. The production was supposed to begin in the spring of next year, but then the cancellation of "Good Girls" was revealed. What caused the abrupt shift? "[We] very much wanted to bring Good Girls back for one more season to complete the story, but sadly we were unable to make the financials work," an NBC staffer was quoted as saying.

When "Good Girls" originally premiered, NBC negotiated an agreement with Netflix to make the show available exclusively on the streaming service. Then, when "Good Girls" was canceled, Netflix was left as the sole option for a revival — but, according to Deadline, no new contract was ever reached. While fans can still catch up on the first few seasons of "Good Girls" on Netflix, it doesn't appear like there will be any new episodes to look forward to.

Behind the scenes of Good Girls, there may have been some turmoil.

Aside from financial concerns, it appears that artistic disagreements played a role in the termination of "Good Girls." Although the show's main females were ready to accept salary cutbacks in exchange for a final season, Manny Montana, who plays Beth's love interest, allegedly was not. His unwillingness to bargain, according to TVLine, may have resulted from his poor connection with Hendricks, as the two have been known to have a rocky relationship off-screen.

Montana and Hendricks have both described their relationship as professional and businesslike, implying that they aren't exactly friends in real life. Hendricks revealed in a 92nd Street Y Q&A that Montana calls her Chris, which bothered her: "Nobody in my life refers to me as Chris. It isn't my given name. It's really ridiculous, in my opinion. And he's never given me the chance to tell him how much I despise it." The tale appeared a little too serious to be dismissed as a humorous aside, emphasizing the likelihood of a behind-the-scenes feud.

Of course, not everyone on the set of "Good Girls" had personal problems with one another. Whitman documented her experience on the show with photos and videos on her Instagram feed. While we're disappointed that there will be no more "Good Girls," we're relieved to learn that the women at the center of the program are still in touch.
