Karan Johar returns after 5 years with Ranveer Singh & Alia Bhatt

Karan Johar, whose last major film as a director was Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016, will make a comeback with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, a love story. Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt play key roles in the film.

With a "love story that is deeply embedded in the roots of family" Karan Johar declared his comeback to feature film direction after five years. Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, his upcoming film, stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the key roles.

Karan Johar revealed Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani on Twitter, along with a motion poster. “Thrilled to get behind the lens with my favorite people in front of it! Presenting Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, headlined by none other than Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt and written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan & Sumit Roy" In a subsequent tweet, he stated that the film will be released in 2022.

Karan Johar stated in a video posted to his Instagram account on Monday that he has spent the last five years focusing on growing the Dharma brand, but now he wants to "get back to (his) favorite spot" - a film set.

“The last five years for me have been about making Dharma Productions, Dharmatic Entertainment, Dharma Cornerstone Agency (DCA), Dharma 2.0 grow and push the cinematic boundaries through the lens of new and talented filmmakers. But personally, my primary passion always lies behind the camera. Telling stories, creating a world filled with a multitude of colors, eternal music, emotions” Karan explained.

“And I feel it's time to go back to my favorite place, onset, and to create what I adore the most - love stories. I am extremely excited to announce my next film tomorrow - a love story that is deeply embedded in the roots of family. I hope to seek all your wishes and blessings as I begin this journey,” he added.

Karan described his return to direction as "the beginning of a new trip and (his) route back home - all at once" in the caption of his Instagram image. His most recent big-screen appearance was in 2016's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. In the aftermath of the Uri incident, the film drew boycott threats due to its casting of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.

Karan has directed two short films for Netflix anthologies Lust Stories and Ghost Stories since Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. In 2018, he announced his next directorial project, Takht. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been postponed.

Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, and Bhumi Pednekar will star in Takht, an ambitious period drama set in the Mughal Empire. Karan revealed during an Instagram live last month that he will start production on the film after completing Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.
