After storms forced the cancellation of Garth Brooks' concert in Nashville, the show will be rescheduled.

Severe thunderstorms hit Nashville on Saturday night, forcing Nissan Stadium managers to cancel a Garth Brooks concert that drew tens of thousands to the outdoor stadium.

A proposal to reschedule the show for Sunday night was also shelved.

According to a Nissan Stadium statement posted on social media early Sunday, organisers intend to reschedule the concert for a yet-to-be-announced date in the near future.

Around 7:50 p.m. Saturday, officials at the stadium issued a "lightning advisory," a few songs into an opening set by the Grand Ole Opry, which included country artists Chris Young, Emmylou Harris, and Trisha Yearwood, as well as longtime announcer Bill Cody.

Concertgoers were told to seek refuge inside the stadium concourse, where some began singing along to Brooks' biggest songs while waiting out the rain and lightning.

At 9:17 p.m., the venue declared a postponement after the delay had lasted more than an hour. Nissan Stadium stated on Twitter that concert organizers were "working with local officials in an attempt to reschedule" for Sunday night, but they finally opted to postpone till a later date.

Nissan Stadium announced about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, "Unfortunately, we were unable to secure enough safety staff and deliver our level of the fan experience in order to carry through with the event on Sunday evening."

Brooks' crew said on Friday that the performance had sold over 70,000 tickets, a Nissan Stadium record, and one of Nashville's largest music events since COVID-19 limitations were relaxed earlier this year. Brooks' rescheduled stadium tour, which will take the seven-time CMA Entertainer of the Year to some of the country's largest musical venues this autumn, will include this visit.

Tickets and parking pass purchased in advance will be honored at the rescheduled date.

"In the very near future, more information about ticket alternatives will be available," the statement added.

Brooks told reporters on Friday that the tour adheres to state, municipal, and venue COVID-19 requirements when bringing thousands of people to a concert. Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise, thanks in part to the highly infectious Delta form.

Although masks are not required at Nashville's Nissan Stadium, an outdoor venue, venue management advises unvaccinated ticketholders to do so. According to Brooks, tour employees will be required to wear masks until January of next year.

"Our goal is to bring people together in large groups," Brooks explained. "We need to take a step back if that's a negative thing. That is exactly what we will do. It would be an honor, as much as I despise doing it, since you're doing your part."
