The New Tom Morello Album Contains On a Fiery AC/DC Cover, Bruce Springsteen, and Eddie Vedder
Tom Morello was slated to go on tour with Rage Against The Machine for the first time in nine years in 2020 and then again this year. When the pandemic caused the cancellation of those plans (the tour has been rescheduled for 2022), Morello set to work on his new album, "The Atlas Underground Fire," which will be released on Oct. 15 via Mom + Pop Music.
The album's first single is a version of AC/classic DC's "Highway To Hell," which features guest vocals from Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. Morello performed the song live on a few occasions in 2014, inspired by a visit to late AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott's grave. when he was filling in on guitar with Springsteen and the E Street Band; Vedder was on an Australian solo tour at the same time and joined the group to sing the song twice at the urging of Springsteen.
Morello tells Variety exclusively, "I began to think, what would the most furious version of this song sound like in 2021?" “With producer Zakk Cervini, I put together a fairly fantastic tape and sent it over to Bruce and Eddie with my fingers crossed. This is what we got: one of the best rock 'n' roll songs ever written, sung by two of the finest rock 'n' roll vocalists ever, followed by a shredding guitar solo by me. Thank you for your time and consideration, and good night.”
Morello was obliged to compose music without the help of the engineers and producers who typically work with him at Veritas, his L.A. home studio, during the epidemic. As a result, he simply recorded his characteristic guitar riffs on his iPhone's Voice Memos app and emailed them to collaborators including Chris Stapleton, Damian Marley, Bring Me The Horizon, Phantogram, Mike Posner, and Dennis Lyxzén of Refused.
“This sounded like a crazy notion at the time, but it gave me a lot of creative freedom since I couldn't overthink any of the guitar sections and had to trust my instincts,” Morello explains. “My technical competence is so poor that I can hardly change the battery in a wah-wah pedal. “Here I am, practically engineering the guitars on this record on my phone.”
Morello's self-titled Atlas Underground debut album, which featured guest performances from Killer Mike, Big Boi, Wu-Tang Clan's RZA and GZA, Marcus Mumford, and Gary Clark Jr., was released in 2018.
