Tommy Dorfman, the star of '13 Reasons Why,' has come out as a trans woman.
Tommy Dorfman, one of Netflix's biggest performers in "13 Reasons Why," has come out as a trans woman.
Dorfman joyfully announced on Instagram on Thursday, "Thrilled to reintroduce me as the woman I am today."
“I'm especially thankful to every trans person who walked this journey before me, broke down barriers, and risked their lives to live truly and radically as themselves,” the post added. “Thank you to all the trans women who taught me who I am, how to live, how to celebrate myself, and how to take up space in this world.”
Dorfman stated that she now identifies with the pronouns "she/her."
In her announcement, Dorfman tweeted photos of herself in a dress and shoes and praised her "day one team" — which included stylists and a glam squad — for supporting her "evolution in the most affirming of ways."
Dorfman rocketed to prominence in 2017 as one of the teenage stars of Netflix's "13 Reasons Why," which is based on the same-named YA novel. Dorfman has a significant social media following, where she posts on LGBTQ issues.
Dorfman's next appearance will be in Lena Dunham's "Sharp Stick," a feature film made in secret amid the coronavirus epidemic. The plot is being kept under wraps, but Dorfman will be seen with Taylour Paige, Scott Speedman, Jon Bernthal, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. CAA and Anonymous Content represent her.
In an interview with Time headlined "Tommy Dorfman Would Like to Clarify," Dorfman stated that she has undergone a medical transition and has been doing so for a year. “I have been secretly identifying and living as a woman — a trans woman — for a year now,” Dorfman added.
Dorfman told the newspaper that she was first concerned that transitioning might jeopardize her Hollywood career.
“It is hard for me to separate my personal and professional transformation since my body and face are inextricably tied to my career,” Dorfman explained. “I was afraid that by aggressively transitioning in my personal life, I would jeopardize whatever job I was meant to have. But, with the exception of Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan, I'm no longer interested in playing male roles. Sometimes you simply have to tell yourself, 'No, this is just who I fucking am.'"
Dorfman stated that she was not at a point where she felt "comfortable enough" to discuss her transition, but she had been sharing photos of herself on Instagram to "let the world see what it looks like," adding, "I realize that transition is beautiful."
Dorfman states that she will not change her name since she was named after her uncle, who died one month after she was born, and she feels linked to her name. “This is Tommy evolving,” she explained. “I'm turning into Tommy.”
“It's weird to think about coming out when I haven't done anything,” Dorfman remarked. “I see today as a reintroduction to myself as a woman, having gone through a medical transition. Coming out is often portrayed as this big surprise, but I was always out. Today is about coming to terms with the fact that I am a trans woman. She/her are my pronouns. Tommy is my name.”
GLAAD published a statement on Thursday in response to Dorfman's announcement, praising the artist and activist for her efforts as an advocate for the LGBTQ community.
“Tommy Dorfman disclosing that she is a transgender woman will inspire so many trans young people and also reminds us that there is no set timeframe or blueprint to follow when it comes to queer identity,” said GLAAD's head of talent, Anthony Allen Ramos. “Tommy won GLAAD's Rising Star Award in 2017 for utilizing her platform to bring attention to crucial problems impacting LGBTQ people, and she continues that work at a time when the trans community is being targeted in states throughout the country. Tommy is a great artist, and we eagerly await the stories she will share about the trans community.”
