Kathy Griffin has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
Kathy Griffin, the comedian, and actress who shaved her head in solidarity with her sister who was through chemotherapy, has revealed she has lung cancer.
"I've had to say something to you all. I'm suffering from cancer "Griffin began a statement on her verified Instagram account on Monday.
"I'm about to have half of my left lung removed in surgery," the message added. "I have lung cancer despite the fact that I have never smoked!"
Griffin's physicians are "extremely hopeful" that her cancer is in its early stages and is just affecting her left lung, she added.
The actress expects to avoid chemotherapy and radiation, and that she will "be up and running around as normal in a month or less," according to the message.
"It's been a hellish 4 years trying to go back to work, making you guys laugh and amusing you, but I'm going to be just fine," Griffin said, presumably in response to outrage following a contentious photo session in which she posed with a fake, bloodied head that resembled Donald Trump.
She finished the message by urging her fans to keep up with their medical appointments. According to the CDC, lung cancer is the third most prevalent cancer in the United States.
Griffin shaved her head in July 2017 to remember her sister Joyce, who was fighting cancer at the time and died in September. Griffin's brother Gary died of cancer in 2014.
Griffin's mother Maggie, who had her own following thanks to her famous daughter, died of dementia last year at the age of 99.
