Morgan Wallen makes an unexpected visit at Luke Bryan's Nashville gig.
Morgan Wallen made his first major musical performance after being videotaped uttering a racist slur in February during Luke Bryan's Friday show in Nashville.
During the acoustic section of the event, Wallen joined Bryan, Jason Aldean, and Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line. The 28-year-old sang "Whiskey Glasses" and "More Than My Hometown" before joining Aldean onstage for "She's Country."
Bryan looked to be taken aback by Wallen's performance.
Onstage, Aldean informed him, “A pretty close buddy of mine is here tonight backstage.” “I'm not sure if you're aware of this.”
“Do I think I'll need another shot of tequila to get through this?” Bryan enquired.
As Wallen walked down the catwalk, giving high fives to fans and handing shot glasses to Bryan, Hubbard, and Aldean, the sold-out crowd erupted in applause for a full minute.
Aldean stated, "Only in Nashville."
Before playing "Hometown," Wallen explained, "This is a song about remaining loyal to oneself."
“And that has been a very difficult task for me recently, yet here I am.”
On Feb. 2, TMZ published a video recorded in front of Wallen's Nashville house by one of his neighbors. While being dropped off, Wallen is heard urging someone to "take care of this... (slur)."
His removal from radio rotation, award show ballots and streaming playlists followed the event, which sparked debate about diversity and inclusion in the country music business.
In the aftermath of the event, Wallen canceled all of his shows; in fact, he had been scheduled to join Bryan on his summer tour, which included Friday's performance. However, in recent months, the artist has slowly returned to the public eye.
On July 23, he spoke to "Good Morning America" for the first time since the event, saying he "was just naive" about his use of the slur.
