We'd never call Chris Hemsworth a beefcake because of his many intellectual accomplishments, but when so much focus is placed on his gleaming, chiseled body, the moniker stands out.
The second trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder was published today, and while it gives us a better idea of what to anticipate from the 29th Marvel Cinematic Universe film, there's no doubting that it heavily emphasized the attraction of its starring hero.
The stinger at the conclusion of the two-minute-and-15-second video has Hemsworth, who plays the god of thunder, baring everything. Even if viewers are not given the complete perspective, we mean all.
Thor is standing in an arena, cloaked, when Zeus, represented by Russell Crowe, uses his abilities to undo his disguise with a flick. "You flick too hard, dammit!" cries an enraged Thor as his clothing fly off his body, leaving only some magical chains.
There's no extreme nudity in this Marvel film, but there is a wide picture from behind with Hemsworth's bum pixelated, with the remainder of the sequence taking place in a mid-shot of his nude torso.
The scene switches to Zeus' entourage fainting, then Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) gazing on with delight while snacking on snacks, mirroring the audience's reaction.
Christian Bale's pigment-challenged villain Gorr the God Butcher, a murderer with a penchant for killing deities, was also shown in the teaser. He seemed to be taking his assignment extremely seriously.
Plus, following only a fleeting glimpse of Jane's reappearance in the first teaser trailer, the newly anointed Mighty Thor gets a lot more screen time this chevalier. As the ex-lovers reconvene after eight years, seven months, and six days apart, she gets to exercise her muscles – both literal and dramatic.
Thor may still be hung up after the astrophysicist turned superhero – which is not to say all scientists are not superheroes in their way, but can they wield Mjolnir?
Thor: Love and Thunder takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, in which Thor left New Asgard to join the Guardians of the Galaxy, leaving Valkyrie in command. In his journey for serenity and meaning, he comes across Gorr the God Butcher and must enlist the help of his allies and friends to fight him.
Thor: Love and Thunder stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Karen Gillan, and is directed by Taika Waititi, who also has a vocal and motion-capture part as Korg. Jeff Goldblum, Matt Damon, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Hemsworth, and Sam Neill all make appearances.
Thor: Love and Thunder is in cinemas on July 8.
